The Miss Old Gold and Black Scholarship Competition is a National Program created and sponsored by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in 1976 and hosted by its local collegiate chapters. The pageant is a source of excellence for women in character education, value clarification, economic and social empowerment, role-modeling, mentoring, commitment to service to humanity and to provide opportunities that present her in a positive way.

The Pageant began in 1976 in New York at the fraternity's National Convention and was won by Miss Denise Smith, representing Zeta Mu Chapter at Georgia State University. The pageant went on hiatus and returned in 1981 with the competition at the 1982 General Convention in Los Angeles, California.

Over the years, the Xi Tau Chapter has produced multiple category winners at the Georgia District level. During the 2024–2025 competition cycle, Miss Old Gold and Black Amariya Moses achieved the chapter’s highest placement to date, earning Best Talent and Best Spirit honors en route to being named 3rd Runner-Up at the 2024 Georgia District Miss Old Gold and Black Scholarship Competition.

​The Miss Old Gold and Black Pageant continues to be an important activity for the students at Georgia Southern University and the young ladies give tremendous credit to the pageant for their achievements and success as student leaders and role models for other students.
